Sowing the Word — Part 2.
But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
Matthew 13:23 (KJV).
The Bible is a storybook expressed through the love of God. It is one continuing story of God and His people. The first thing to remind you is that countless versions of the Bible exist. They come in all forms and translations. There are different versions in history, and other religions interpret the texts in their way, adding or taking away. The commonly used English-language version is the King James Bible, printed in 1611. The oldest text could be the Hebrew Bible or the Tanakh.
The Bible often uses planting and farming imagery because the culture of the people in the Bible stories matters; most are farmers, shepherds, and fishers. It is easy to use illustrations associated with these people so they can understand. God wants you to know, understand, and be wise. He wants you to grow. He wants you to read, study, meditate, and become prosperous. God desires to give you more than enough.
The word of God is described as a seed in this instance because most of the people listening to the parable while Jesus spoke were farmers. They understood the methodology of a planted seed. They understood seedtime and harvest. They know about the soil and when to plant or not. They know about fertilisers, manure, soil treatment, irrigation, crop, and all the tasks involved in sowing a seed, cultivating, and harvesting the seed.
The germination of the seed is the most critical stage in a plant’s life cycle. Water, air, temperature, and light are all essential for the seed germination process, starting from imbibition, activation and succeeding manifestation. Some will tell you that water is the most important as the seed must first absorb water, but they forget that without the ground, the seed won’t have access to water. The ground is the determining factor. It is the medium in which the seed receives all the essentials needed for germination.
Jesus, in his parable of the Sower, was reminding his audience that they are the ground the seed of the word will germinate and bear a hundredfold. They determine if the word grows or perishes.
