The Sure Word for Today

Emotional Intimacy.

Key Bible Verse:
“A And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.”
— Genesis 2:25

The Affirmation
Our marriage grows in emotional safety and trust. We share with honesty, listen with love, protect each other’s hearts, and build deeper connection without shame.

Emotional Intimacy | Part 3

The Sure Word Devotion
Day 3: Listen With Care
Listening with care is one of the strongest ways to build emotional intimacy. Many spouses hear words, but they miss the heart behind the words. Your spouse may be sharing pain, fear, disappointment, pressure, or a need for reassurance. If you listen only to correct, defend, or explain yourself, you may win the moment but lose connection.

Careful listening says, “Your heart is safe with me.” It slows down judgement and creates room for understanding. It does not interrupt. It does not mock. It does not rush to solve everything. Sometimes your spouse needs your presence before your advice. Sometimes they need to know that you heard them before they can receive correction. Listening with care makes honesty feel less risky and strengthens trust.

Today, practise listening as love in action. Put your phone down. Give full attention. Ask gentle questions. Repeat what you heard before responding. Notice emotion, not only information. If your spouse shares something sensitive, protect it. Do not use it later in conflict. Emotional intimacy grows when listening becomes safe, patient, and honourable.

Connect: Your Challenge and Response
You may listen to reply rather than understand, especially when you feel criticised. Respond by slowing down today and giving your spouse careful attention without interrupting or defending.

Extend: Faith in Action
In one conversation today, ask your spouse, “What do you need me to understand?” Listen fully, repeat what you heard, and respond with patience.

Reflection and Application
Do I listen to understand or to defend?
What emotions have I been missing?
Where do I interrupt too quickly?
How can I make my spouse feel heard?
What listening habit must I build?

Inspirational Quote by Jefferson Otonbara Imgbi
“Careful listening protects emotional intimacy. When you hear the heart behind the words, trust grows, safety deepens, and love becomes easier to share.”

Let Us Pray
Father, teach us to listen with care and humility. Remove defensiveness from our hearts and help us hear one another with patience. Let our attention, words, and responses build trust, emotional safety, and deeper love in our marriage. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
